The patterned poly(2-methoxy-5-(3',7'-dimethyloctyloxy)-paraphenylenevinylene film is fabricated using hot embossing lithography. The effect of the embossed microstructure on the light emitted from the polymer is examined by measuring the angle-dependent photoluminescence and its photonic band structure. The imposed grating modifies the emitted light by Bragg scattering into free space light that would otherwise be trapped as waveguide modes. This simple patterning technique may find application in improving the performance of light-emitting polymer devices

We show that it may be possible to overcome these losses by demonstrating the operation of a distributed-feedback polymer laser fabricated upon a silver substrate. The device lasing threshold was ~150 times greater than that of an otherwise similar metal-free device, though similar to early polymer lasers. The device emission characteristics correlated well with the measured photonic band structure, allowing an explanation of the effect of the microstructure on device operation

The laser was configured as a surface-emitting, two-dimensional distributed feedback laser, based on the conjugated polymer poly(2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene). Pulsed, band-edge lasing was observed at 636 nm above a threshold pump energy of 4 nJ. The laser exhibited an energy slope efficiency of 6.8%, with a maximum output energy of 1.12 nJ at a pump energy of 20.4 nJ. The output beam had an azimuthally polarized annular profile with a beam quality factor (M2) of 2.2, close to the theoretical value of the lowest-order Laguerre–Gaussian and Bessel–Gaussian annular modes. We explain the origin of the azimuthal polarization as due to a coherent combination of the resonant fields supported by the two gratings

    Micromegas TPC studies at high magnetic fields using the charge dispersion signal

    The International Linear Collider (ILC) Time Projection Chamber (TPC) transverse space-point resolution goal is 100 microns for all tracks including stiff 90 degree tracks with the full 2 meter drift. A Micro Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) readout TPC can achieve the target resolution with existing techniques using 1 mm or narrower pads at the expense of increased detector cost and complexity. The new MPGD readout technique of charge dispersion can achieve good resolution without resorting to narrow pads. This has been demonstrated previously for 2 mm x 6 mm pads with GEMs and Micromegas in cosmic ray tests and in a KEK beam test in a 1 Tesla magnet. We have recently tested a Micromegas-TPC using the charge dispersion readout concept in a high field super-conducting magnet at DESY. The measured Micromegas gain was found to be constant within 0.5% for magnetic fields up to 5 Tesla. With the strong suppression of transverse diffusion at high magnetic fields, we measure a flat 50 micron resolution at 5 Tesla over the full 15 cm drift length of our prototype TPC.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Distinct patterns of thought mediate the link between brain functional connectomes and well-being

    Ongoing thought patterns constitute important aspects of both healthy and abnormal human cognition. However, the neural mechanisms behind these daily experiences and their contribution to well-being remain a matter of debate. Here, using resting-state fMRI and retrospective thought sampling in a large neurotypical cohort (n = 211), we identified two distinct patterns of thought, broadly describing the participants’ current concerns and future plans, that significantly explained variability in the individual functional connectomes. Consistent with the view that ongoing thoughts are an emergent property of multiple neural systems, network-based analysis highlighted the central importance of both unimodal and transmodal cortices in the generation of these experiences. Importantly, while state-dependent current concerns predicted better psychological health, mediating the effect of functional connectomes, trait-level future plans were related to better social health, yet with no mediatory influence. Collectively, we show that ongoing thoughts can influence the link between brain physiology and well-being

    Patterns of participation over four rounds of annual fecal immunochemical test-based screening for colorectal cancer: what predicts rescreening?

    Published online: 01 August 2017Background: Participation at the recommended intervals is critical for screening to be effective in reducing colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence. This study describes patterns of screening participation over four rounds of fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) to identify whether demographic variables and prior screening satisfaction are significantly associated with patterns of re-participation. Methods: Baseline surveys were mailed to 4000 South Australians randomly selected from the electoral-roll. Respondents (n = 1928/48.2%) were offered four annual FIT rounds. Screening participation and satisfaction at each round were recorded. Results: Study participation was 58.5, 66.9, 73.1 and 71.4% respectively over four rounds. Three participation patterns were described: consistent participation (43.1%), consistent non-participation (26.4%) and inconsistent participation (changeable; 30.5%), including intermittent and sustained change patterns. Sustained change described those who changed participatory behavior and then maintained for at least two rounds (n = 375/19.5%). Older people, and those not working were most likely to sustain participation. Younger invitees, especially men, were more likely to change participatory behavior and sustain the change. People with higher disadvantage, less education, not working and with no prior (pre-trial) screening experience were more likely to start participating and drop out. People dissatisfied with a prior screening test, including finding aspects embarrassing or unpleasant, were also more likely not to participate in annual screening or to drop out. Conclusions: The findings identify those at risk of non- or inconsistent participation in rescreening. They should aid targeting of interventions for demographic groups at risk and ensuring screening experiences are not perceived as unpleasant or difficult.Joanne M.     Single cell induced optical confinement in biological lasers

In this study, the potential of fluorescent biological cells as refractive index landscapes and active optical elements is investigated using a combined Fourier- and hyperspectral imaging technique. We show that the refractive index contrast between cell and surrounding leads to three dimensional confinement of photons inside living cells. The Fourier- and real-space emission characteristics of these biological lasers are closely related and can be predicted from one another. Investigations of the lasing threshold for different energy and momentum position in Fourier-space give insight into the fundamental creation of longitudinal and transverse lasing modes within the cell. These findings corroborate the potential of living biological materials for precision engineering of photonic structures and may pave the way towards low threshold polariton lasing from single cells.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
